Lakposhtha parvaz mikonand (Turtles Can Fly) (2004) - Bahman Ghobadi

“Turtles Can Fly” is set in Ghobadi’s native Kurdistan on the eve of the American invasion of Iraq. Thirteen-year-old Soran (Soran Ebrahim) is known as “Satellite,” for his installation of dishes and antennae for local villages looking for news of Saddam. He is the dynamic leader of the children, organizing the dangerous but necessary sweeping and clearing of the minefields. He then arranges trade-ins for the unexploded mines. The industrious Satellite falls for an unlikely orphan (Avaz Latif), a sad-faced girl travelling with her brother Henkov (Hirsh Feyssal), who appears to have the gift of clairvoyance. The siblings are care-taking a three-year-old, whose connection to the pair is discovered as harsh truths are unveiled.

The devastation to this land and its inhabitants is revealed in the matter-of-fact perspective of the children and is equally displayed with every poignant detail of its unbearable nature. The exquisitely haunting mountains play backdrop to violence and tragedy, but at the same time the heart and humour of the children is an undeniable force.

“Turtles Can Fly” won the Golden Shell at San Sebastian and the Silver Bear at Chicago and is the Iranian entry to the Academy for 2004 Foreign Film consideration. — © IFC Films

New Coldplay - Death Will Never Conquer

Because their tour has just kicked off, Coldplay has released a b-side for fan enjoyment - keeping with the death theme that they have been kinda hooked on, this one's called Death Will Never Conquer. So, if you're planning on checking Chris Martin & Co. (sounds like a clothier) sometime soon, you might wanna check this tune out because they will be playing it on tour... with a twist.

Coldplay - Concert Prive FRANCE Jun-29-2008

After surfacing in 2000 with the breakthrough single
"Yellow," Coldplay quickly became one of the biggest bands
of the new millennium, honing a mix of introspective Brit
-pop and anthemic rock that landed the British quartet a
near-permanent residence on record charts world-wide. The
group"s emergence was perfectly timed; Radiohead had just
released the overly cerebral Kid A, while Oasis had
ditched two founding members and embraced psychedelic
experimentation on Standing on the Shoulders of Giants.
U.K. audiences were hungry for a fresh-faced rock band
with big aspirations and an even bigger sound, and
Coldplay was more than happy to take the reigns.
Parachutes went multi-platinum in several countries and
earned the band their first Grammy, but Coldplay continued
to grow into the 2000s, topping their debut album"s
success with higher record sales and an increased public
profile.

Chris Martin (vocals/piano), Jon Buckland (guitar), Will
Champion (drums), and Guy Berryman (bass) were all born
into families in which music was encouraged. Martin, the
eldest of five, began playing the piano as a young child
and later took solace in the work of Tom Waits. Buckland,
on the other hand, grew up with the heavy guitar sounds of
Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. Scotland native Berryman
preferred funk to indie rock, thereby leaving him to play
bass, while multi-instrumentalist Champion didn"t plan to
be a drummer until he joined Coldplay"s lineup. The
bandmates came together in 1996 while attending the
University College of London, and the Safety EP was issued
shortly after their first gig at a Manchester festival for
unsigned bands. The release only saw 500 pressings, as did
the subsequent Brothers & Sisters EP. Nevertheless, it was
enough to win the band a U.K. deal with Parlophone in
April 1999, and the five-track Blue Room EP arrived that
fall. With nods from the media, the foursome was hailed as
the next Travis, thanks to their simplistic acoustics and
charming personas.

Parlophone ushered the band into Parr St. Studios in
Liverpool, where they recorded the bulk of their debut
album. Parachutes was released in July 2000 and became a
swift hit on the strength of four U.K. singles, several of
which enjoyed popularity in America as well. With "Yellow"
climbing the charts on both sides of the Atlantic,
Parachutes was released in the U.S. in November, where its
sales soon rivaled -- and eventually surpassed -- those in
the U.K.

Riding on the strength of their universally popular debut,
Coldplay headed back into the studio in fall 2001 to work
on a sophomore album. They emerged with A Rush of Blood to
the Head, releasing the album worldwide in August 2002 and
embarking on a global concert tour soon after. "The
Scientist" enjoyed regular radio rotation, while both
"Clocks" and "In My Place" won Grammy Awards. The CD/DVD
package Live 2003 was issued to highlight the group"s
popular tour, and Martin specifically earned a higher
notch on the celebrity scale by marrying actress Gwyneth
Paltrow in December 2003. Paltrow gave birth to the
couple"s first daughter, Apple Blythe Alison Martin, the
following April.

Fatherhood didn"t stop Martin from working, as Coldplay
began recording material for a third album within weeks.
Previously recorded material with longtime producer Ken
Nelson was scrapped early on, while Danton Supple
(Morrissey, the Cure) joined Coldplay to complete the
recording of X&Y. "Speed of Sound" marked Coldplay"s first
single from their long-awaited third effort in spring
2005; the album followed in June, topping charts around
the world and selling more than eight million copies
during its first year. Such success put Coldplay on the
same commercial level as U2, and Coldplay retreated to the
studio in late 2006 to work with famed producer Brian Eno
(who had teamed up with U2 two decades prior for The
Joshua Tree). Recording sessions with Eno were completed
within one year, followed by several months of mixing and
growing anticipation from the band"s audience. Viva La
Vida -- also known by its extended name, Viva La Vida or
Death and All His Friends -- ultimately arrived in June
2008.

Glastonbury music Festival : Amy Winehouse 2008

Amy Winehouse performs on the Pyramid Stage during day two of the Glastonbury music Festival, near Glastonbury, England Saturday June 28, 2008. The festival, held on Worthy Farm near Glastonbury, turns more than 320 hectares of rolling countryside into a tent city and is the largest greenfield music and performing arts festival in the world.

Amy Winehouse was admitted back into hospital only hours after sinning at the Glastonbury concert!

Amy Winehouse stunned the Glastonbury crowd, as the troubled singer lashed out at a fan of hers who was in the front row.

Amy Winehouse took her performance of Rehab down from the Stage into the pit. It was there that she became involved in a scuffle with a member of the crowd.

Her spokesperson said:

‘The ‘lashing out’ was when someone tried to grab her hair and she reacted.’

Amy Winehouse was looking tanned, although tired during the concert.

Amy Winehouse then arrived at the central London hospital at 3am to continue her treatment for emphysema.

"Dont touch my hair fan or I will smack you one. That is what Amy Winehouse did last night at Glastonbury."

The trainwreck singer also spat gum into the audience and viciously attacked rapper Kanye West during her performance of ‘Some Unholy War’ where she sang the following line: “At least I’m not opening for a cunt like Kanye” (censored audio is after the cut). West efficiently responded to the attack on his blog(http://www.kanyeuniversecity.com/blog/?em3106=197280_-1__0_%7E0_-1_6_2008_0_0&em3161=&em3281=) where he wrote the following: “Amy Winehouse hates me!!! Now I’ve really made it!!! LOL!!!!”. With the unholy shenanigans that Amy has been carrying on as late, she’s the LAST person to be calling anyone a cunt. Furthermore, I don’t understand why her management continues to let her perform at events when she always ends up making a repeated fool of herself over and over again. Some folks really shouldn’t throw stones from their glass houses.

The 2008 album from Dwele, is Sketches of a Man. Neo-soul singer/songwriter/producer Dwele grew up on Detroit's west side, listening to soul music from Motown visionaries Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye as well as jazz on the radio. Born Andwele Gardner, he began writing songs at the age of ten, after his father was murdered outside his home, and attended Cody High in Detroit. Dwele spent a year studying music at Wayne State but then opted for an informal education, making music at his home while living in Dearborn and working for AAA. His demo tape, 1998's The Rize, made waves around the Motor City, and he spent time collaborating with Detroit hip-hop group Slum Village and Philadelphia rapper Bahamadia.This album brings Dwele back to a more gritty, experimental, and non-overproduced sound - one that originally caught listener's ears with his first EP demo Rize released in 1998, which I'll post later.

Mint Royale Mint Royale's Singin' in the Rain set for no1

Can't believe they are releasing this again n set to go no1 after britains got talent

I've been a fan of Mint Royale for many years now. 'Don't Falter' featuring the lovely Lauren Laverne is one of my favourite pop songs from the early part of this decade, and the album it came from, 'On The Ropes' is a great carefree, indie dance pop album that just sounds so happy it's unreal. A few years ago they released a remix of the classic 'Singing In The Rain', and it did ok, featuring on a car advert and continuing their tradition of occasionally bothering the top twenty.

Three years down the line a teenage body popper used the song to dance to on some crappy reality show... now 'Singin' In The Rain' is all set to be number one this weekend. Crazy. I suppose it's a good thing that more people will get to hear this great band, but I can't help but feel that they didn't need this help and should have had the success many years ago.

The history of music is full of stories about fortunate outcomes, breakthroughs, fortunate and unfortunate events, misery, tragedies and treacheries. Saban Bajramovic has had plenty of each and some to spare. A legend in his own lifetime, he’s become a synonym for Gypsy music. So many stories have been told about him that there’s no way to separate fact from fiction. He even managed to survive Goli Otok (Barren Island), the infamous prison camp for political prisoners in post-WWII Yugoslavia, though he was imprisoned for deserting the army in order to see his girlfriend. Hard life has left traces and bruises on his soul. God knows how many times he was stabbed, beaten, cheated. In general, his life has been a dynamic turn of events that eventually (and righteously) brought him the title "The King of Gypsy Music" (or "The Nat King Cole From the City of Nish"). Many of today’s famous musicians earn millions by recording some of his approximately 700. However, one thing is certain—there’s no way to separate the man from his songs, lyrics and music. Romano Raj (Gypsy Heaven) marks a new turn for this 71 year-old singer. After fifteen years away from recording, he arrives with a strong album where, as usual, he is the complete author. Supported by Dobrovoljno Kovachko Drustvo (the Voluntary Blacksmith Society), a team of experienced musicians on the Serbian scene, Bajramovic delivers a dynamic album full of passionate vocals, and a tasteful mixture of Gypsy songs with jazz, funk and Cuban flavors.

Dee Dee Bridgewater - Live at Yoshi's

13 years after her prior in-performance release Live in Paris, Bridgewater has not so much matured or refined her approach as she has gotten bolder. This CD was recorded on what would have been her idol Ella Fitzgerald's 80th birthday weekend at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA. She scats in the style of Fitzgerald on most of these numbers -- not quite in the higher range, but comfortably in the middle -- while also displaying some of Sarah Vaughan's more deeply soulful traits. It's a combination of the two, with a little bawdiness for spice, that has made Bridgewater a prime purveyor of excitable jazz vocalizing these days. The set begins with the Charlie Shavers evergreen "Undecided," as the singer stops and starts the band on several dimes for the initial lines, exacting choppy phrases and similar scatting á la Fitzgerald on the bridge. In an Ella-cum-Betty Carter mode for "What a Little Moonlight Can Do," Bridgewater waxes frantically on the effect of an obviously full moon turning her into a scatting monster during two different uptempos. Then she brings out the Sarah Vaughan nightshade for "Midnight Sun," a memorable rendition especially buoyed by Eliez, with rubato intro of bass and piano underneath cat-walking, stealth phrases, stunningly set between the bass and piano lock-step with the vocal line. Then they dive headlong into "Love for Sale" for just over 14 minutes, and more delicate vocals lead to a scat much faster than the band's rhythm. The finale "Cotton Tail" is a three-ring exercise in scat. This program comprises a side of Bridgewater's well-known vehicles used for years as a springboard for her formidable talent -- unabashed and unafraid.

‘Lovers…’ sounds a bit more like the Coldplay we met in during the Parachutes-era. But without a doubt, this cut of the song is lacking the final Eno-fied touches that we will be pleased to hear once the album leaks. This track does offer some excitement around the 2:30 mark; something that can sound amazing when backed by the instrumentation we enjoy on the album’s title track. James Taylor Quartet – In The Hand Of The Inevitable

"In The Hand Of The Inevitable" (Acid Jazz Records), released in 1995, was received with critical acclaim and is Acid Jazz's current top seller having sold over 250.000 copies. It's not quite the typical James Taylor, who likes more the raw stuff ("instrumental Hammond led rocking jazz funk workouts"). But this album follows Incognito (especially the horns!) and The Brand New Heavies with a splendid Alison Limerick on vocals. Further members are guitarist David Taylor, John Willmott on sax and flute, bassist Gary Crocket and drummer Neil Robinson. "Love Will Keep Us Together" kicks off the album. My instrumental favorite: "3 Mile Island". BTW, the Japanese release has 2 bonus tracks.

If anyone likes this kinda stuff, just drop a line and I will be more than willing to post some more by the JTQ.
